Understanding Tanzania’s Seasons

Tanzania has two main seasons:

  1. Dry SeasonJune to October

  2. Wet SeasonMarch to May (long rains) & November (short rains)

Tanzania’s location near the equator means temperatures are fairly consistent year-round, but rainfall patterns define travel conditions.

Best Time for Wildlife Safaris

June – October (Dry Season)

  • Why it’s best: Vegetation is thin, and water sources are limited, making wildlife more concentrated and visible.

  • Best places to visit:

    • Serengeti National Park – Great Migration (especially July–September)

    • Ngorongoro Crater – Year-round game viewing

    • Tarangire National Park – Elephant migration peaking around August

    • Ruaha & Selous – Remote parks with exceptional sightings during the dry months

Note: This is the high season — prices are higher, and parks are busier.

The Great Migration – Month-by-Month

MonthLocationWhat Happens

Best Time for Zanzibar & Coastline

Best Months:

  • June – October (cooler, less humid, dry)

  • December – March (hotter, sunny, great for diving)

  • Avoid: April & May — heavy rains, high humidity, risk of flooding.

Activities:

  • Snorkeling & diving around Mnemba Atoll, Kendwa & Nungwi

  • Beach relaxation, spice tours, and Stone Town exploration

Best Time to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

  • January to March – Quieter on the mountain, cooler weather, higher chance of snow at the summit

  • June to October – Clearer skies, warmer, popular with trekkers

Avoid March–May due to slippery trails and poor visibility.

Best Time for Photography

  • Dry Season (Jun–Oct): Best lighting and wildlife concentration

  • Calving Season (Jan–Feb): Unique chance to capture newborns and predator-prey drama

  • Migration Crossings (Jul–Sept): Epic action shots

Best Time for Budget Travelers

  • Low Season: April & May

    • Rainy, but you’ll find big discounts on lodges and safari tours.

    • Less crowd, green landscapes, and unique birdwatching opportunities.

    • Some roads and airstrips may be inaccessible.
