Flying Doctors Services

Peace of Mind While You Explore East Africa

While planning your safari adventure in East Africa, it’s natural to wonder: What happens in case of a medical emergency in a remote area? Fortunately, AMREF Flying Doctors offer a reliable air ambulance service, with fully equipped aircraft, medical personnel, and pilots on standby 24/7 — across Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi.

For just $40 per person for 30 days, you can explore the wild with confidence, knowing professional help is only a phone call away.

🩺 What’s Covered?

In the event of a serious medical emergency — whether it’s a snake bite in Kenya’s Masai Mara, a leg injury in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park, or a sudden illness in Tanzania’s Serengeti — Flying Doctors will:

  • Provide professional medical advice by phone

  • Evacuate you to a top-level hospital in Nairobi via air ambulance

  • Deploy a team of trained doctors and paramedics to meet you at the nearest airstrip

On Mount Kilimanjaro, helicopter evacuations can be arranged to Moshi, subject to terrain, weather, and aircraft capacity. However, Mount Meru is NOT covered, so please ensure your travel insurance includes evacuation from this location.

Important Limitations

  • Flying Doctors cover emergency medical evacuation only — not hospital treatment, accommodation, or visa costs.

  • If you’re flown into Kenya, and you’re not a citizen, you may need a visa. AMREF can help facilitate this quickly.

  • This service is not a replacement for full travel or health insurance. We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive coverage before traveling.

Travel With Confidence

We highly recommend adding Flying Doctors coverage to your safari package. For a minimal fee, it offers invaluable peace of mind while traveling through the wild and remote areas of East Africa.

Our team is happy to assist you with the registration process before your trip.Travel & Cancellation Insurance – What You Must Know

We require all our guests to have valid travel insurance covering:

  • Emergency medical expenses

  • Trip interruptions or cancellations

  • Loss or damage of luggage

  • Adventure activities (e.g., safaris, trekking)

We also recommend obtaining cancellation insurance, especially for longer trips. In some cases, only a partial refund is available without it. Please consult your insurance provider to ensure you’re adequately protected.

Safari Smart. Travel Safe

We take every measure to ensure your safari runs smoothly — and 99% of the time, our guests return with nothing but incredible memories. But in wild, untamed nature, it’s always best to be prepared.

AMREF Flying Doctors have been serving safari travelers since 1957. With their support, you can enjoy the adventure without the unnecessary worry.

Because we all love a little excitement — just not too much.
